How the credit-market dataset is built: what is measured for each country, how dollar figures are calculated, what happens with gaps and preliminary values, how often the dataset is updated and how errors are fixed.
## What is measured
Uzbekistan. Volume: the loan portfolio of banks from the central bank’s problem-loans table; banks and microfinance organisations are tracked separately and never summed. Quality: NPLs as a share of the loan portfolio per the central bank’s definition, that is loans overdue by more than 90 days. Structure: loans to individuals against total loans by loan type. Concentration: the “banks with state share” group; its composition is set by the central bank and changes, including when state stakes are sold.
Kazakhstan. Volume: loans to the economy of second-tier banks from monthly ARDFM releases. Quality: NPL90+ (loans overdue by more than 90 days) as a share of the loan portfolio. Structure: household loans against loans to the economy, that is the sum of household and business loans.
Kyrgyzstan. Volume: all banking-sector loans under the NBKR classification. Quality: the share of classified loans (substandard, doubtful and loss categories); the share of loans under watch is shown separately.
Only the direction and pace of change in these shares are compared across countries, not their levels: national definitions of problem loans differ.
## Currency conversion
Dollar amounts are an indicative conversion at the official rate of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan on each snapshot date. Tenge and som are converted using the Uzbek sum as the intermediate currency, via the same rates archive. Original amounts are stored in national currency unchanged. In dollars, a change may differ from the change in national currency in magnitude and even in direction: the exchange-rate effect is part of any period change.
## Gaps and preliminary data
For some months historical files are missing from the archive. Months without a snapshot remain in the dataset as gaps, but lines between adjacent months are not drawn across the gap; months without a snapshot are shaded.
Kyrgyzstan: the NBKR reports the latest months as preliminary; such points carry a hollow marker and an asterisk. An NBKR bulletin month is mapped to the snapshot date of the 1st of the following month.
Kazakhstan: data points taken from secondary accounts and not verified against ARDFM releases are marked unverified and excluded from the public dataset until confirmed against the primary source.
## The Kazakhstan registry
The Kazakhstan series is assembled by hand from monthly ARDFM releases on the banking sector: every point in the dataset carries a link to the release and a note. Values are transcribed verbatim.
Each point passes consistency checks: household plus business loans must agree with loans to the economy within rounding, and the NPL90+ amount must agree with its share where the portfolio is known.
## Update frequency
The dataset is updated once a month after the Central Bank of Uzbekistan publishes its data. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are taken at their latest verified point. A new dataset goes live only after a new editorial review.
## Corrections policy
Errors are fixed after verification against the primary source; every change is recorded in the release log. After a correction, the publication date on the page changes. Found an error — write via the form at
